About CVD

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease is widespread around the world and the statistics are alarming:

  • By 2020, cardiovascular disease and stroke will become the leading cause of both death and disability worldwide.7
  • At least 20 million people survive heart attacks and strokes every year; many require continuing, costly care and are at high risk for recurrence and death.9
  • Cardiovascular disease has no geographic, gender, or socioeconomic boundaries.8
  • According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 17.5 million, or 30 percent, of all deaths each year.10

The financial burdens of the disease are enormous. In the European Union alone, annual expenses associated with direct and indirect costs of all CVD are estimated at 169 billion Euro (in 2006).10

The broader, appropriate use of Aspirin therapy can help prevent tens of thousands of non-fatal heart attacks and save untold financial resources in both direct and indirect healthcare costs.
